A Massachusetts man is facing charges after he launched an attack against a Black fisherman and his daughter, per The Root.
The attack unfolded last month on Memorial Day, when Sheron Brown and his 10-year-old daughter, Azaylia, went to go fishing at Lake Shirley in Lunenburg.
Brown noted that he has a season pass to fish at the lake and is well-known in the community surrounding the lake due to his frequent visits. The father-daughter had previously never had issues with any of the residents, who are mostly white, until the Memorial Day incident, during which one man threw a rock at their boat.
As the pair were fishing in the lake, the man came out of his home and started yelling at them from the dock, telling Brown and his daughter that they shouldn't be there.
âIâm here with my daughter. Itâs Memorial Day. Why are you targeting me?â Brown recalled responding, noting that he told the man that he would stay away from his property.
The encounter escalated as the man threw a rock that landed just feet away from their boat.
âDid you just throw a rock at me?â Brown said, per video of the incident.
âYeah, I threw rocks at you n****r,â the man responded.
Brown noted that his 10-year-old daughter had never experienced such blatant racism before.
âWe didnât do anything wrong. This guy is being mean,â he told his daughter.
Police responded to the incident, identifying the man as 66-year-old David McPartlan. McPartlan was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault to intimidate, including anti-Black bias.
