Mathew Knowles seems to believe that Beyoncé's record label has contributed to the reason why the 32-time Grammy winner has never taken home the Album of the Year trophy.
The conversation surrounding Beyoncé's Album of the Year snubs resurfaced at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 4), when Jay-Z called out the Recording Academy during his acceptance speech.
"I don't want to embarrass this young lady but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics that doesn't work," Jay-Z said of his wife as he received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.
In a conversation with TMZ, Knowles suggested that Beyoncé's label, Columbia Records, is to blame for his daughter never receiving the coveted award.
“People don’t know the process. Your record label can only appoint one person in a category. So that means her record label—I’m gonna call you out, Columbia Records—her record label has never really put her in that category for consideration,” Knowles said.
Knowles went on to point out how Adele, who won Album of the Year over Bey's Lemonade at the 2017 Grammys, is also represented by Columbia Records.
“I mean, there’s a financial reason. Maybe Adele sold more records worldwide? I don’t know these answers. But these are some of the thought processes that they go through,” he added. “Maybe you say, ‘You know, Beyoncé has her success. Here’s an opportunity to push Adele, so let’s push her.’”
Harry Styles, who is also signed with Columbia, beat Beyoncé's Renaissance album at last year's Grammys.
“I’ve been 14 years in those rooms supporting the label. I know exactly how this works," Knowles said.
