During an Oval Office meeting with Slovak Republic Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini Friday, Trump answered questions about his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin for over an hour earlier that day, saying they spoke about a variety of topics including the political unrest Venezuela, North Korea, nuclear weapons, and the Mueller Report. A reporter asked Trump if he had discussed the well-documented Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
"He actually, uh, sort of smiled when he said something to the effect that 'it started off as a mountain and it ended up being a mouse.'"
That's an adorable attempt at the mountain/molehill saying. It's also a hugely insulting act; the leader of a foreign adversary smiled (was it a video call?) about meddling in the elections of a country in front of the leader of that country. And Trump tells the story with delight, not anger or humiliation as would be more appropriate. He apparently doesn't view the "mouse" activity of meddling in our elections as a serious concern.
""Did you tell him not to meddle in the next election?"
Uh, we didn't discuss that, really, we didn't discuss it."
So, they discussed the meddling in the 2016 elections, even had a little laugh about it, but did not discuss the meddling in the 2020 elections..?
He says they also discussed trade, or as Trump puts it, "He'd like to do trade, and we'd like to do trade," and ended by saying it's good to get along with Russia, the country that the guy sitting next to him was there to solidify our strategic partnership against.
From the joint statement from Trump and Pellegrini:
"We remain firm in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and energy security, including through Slovak reverse gas flow to Ukraine. Continued sanctions against Russia must remain in force until the Minsk Agreements are fully implemented."
That's a little messed up; he looks like he forgot he was there, like, "Oh, Peter, no, we, you know, it's good to just get along, we get a long, they get along, just being friendly, you know. We good? Yeah, we're good. It's fine."
