Following a briefing to the Senate on the US's role in Yemen in relation to the US-Saudi Arabia relationship, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked why he was briefing the Senate instead of CIA Director Gina Haspel, as would be, has been, standard procedure given the nature of the briefing - Congress is considering cutting military aid to Saudi Arabia, and wants to know more about the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi that the CIA concluded was ordered by the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
"I was asked to be here, and here I am."
And to the follow up question of why he was briefing the Senate instead of the CIA director:
"I was asked to be here, and I'm here."
He means the White House asked him to do it instead of Haspel because of the next question he was asked, if he believed the the crown prince of Saudi Arabia ordered the murder Khashoggi. Trump has repeatedly brushed aside the CIA's assessment, stating the crown prince has denied it and the US gets a lot of money from Saudi Arabia.
"I do believe..."
Wait a second, is he actually going to go against Trump's lie...
"...I have read every piece of intelligence...there is no direct reporting connecting the crown prince to the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi."
Nope. There's probably something in the wording that gives him an out so he's not blatantly lying.
