Putin "could be a friend" - Trump when he already knew about indictments

During the detailing of the indictment of 12 Russian operatives Friday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein mentioned that he briefed Trump about the allegations "earlier this week."

The day before, on Thursday, when speaking from Brussels during the NATO summit, Trump said this about Putin:

“I think we’ll get along well. But ultimately he’s a competitor. He’s representing Russia. I’m representing the United States. So in a sense we’re competitors, not a question of friend or enemy. He’s not my enemy."

“Hopefully some day, maybe he’ll be a friend. It could happen but I don’t know him very well.”

Rosenstein didn't say he briefed Trump "yesterday" or "last night," he said, "earlier this week," which means Trump was aware of the upcoming indictments of Russian intelligence officers when he said that hopefully some day he'll be Putin's friend.
